Vintage pocket watch and wristwatch parts, aluminium, recycled copper wire.
This piece was commissioned by a friend, who wanted a special gift for his wife, to commemorate their tenth wedding anniversary. So I started with a working title, which stuck, based upon them being a “decade on”!
The brief was that the piece was to be a brooch, a dragon and that it would contain aluminium or tin, the traditional symbols for the tenth anniversary. For this reason, I selected a steel watch case, (as close to tin, that I could get, thinking tin can) and made a disc of aluminium, upon which I inscribed their names and “celebrating ten years of wedded bliss”. The disc is hidden within the watch case like a secret. The back of the case opens, to allow it to be engraved with a personal message, should that be desired.
